5th Grade

Our main goal in 5th grade is to foster a love of learning while teaching responsibility and kindness towards others.  We strive to prepare our students to be successful in middle school and to ultimately be caring, contributing members of society!

We use a variety of hands-on math activities with an emphasis on problem solving to challenge our students.  Engaging science experiments and explorations, virtual field trips around the world via technology, and getting lost within the pages of a great book are some experiences our 5th graders can expect. Students will also participate in dramatizations, role-play, and research to learn more about history. We strive to make our 5th graders’ last year in elementary school exciting, rewarding, and fun!

Expectations of 5th Graders at Northside

While emphasizing academic excellence and maintaining high expectations for all students, we also offer opportunities to develop the whole child.  Fifth graders are encouraged to participate in extracurricular activities such as yearbook staff, athletic teams (basketball and bowling), and other 4-H clubs to name a few.  Also, 5th grade is a time for students to prepare for middle school by taking more responsibility for organization, time management, and long term planning.

Parent Engagement

Parents/families are encouraged to be an important part of our classroom! Volunteers are needed throughout the year to read to/with students, assist with special projects, attend field trips, help with Read Across America week, Read-a-Thon, and much more. Also, parents who consistently check their child’s homework and Reading Logs, encourage reading at home, attend teacher-parent conferences, parent nights, and communicate regularly with teachers, help their child experience success that can’t be reached by students and teachers alone!

From the Teachers

“There is nothing greater than seeing a student getting excited about learning and then experiencing success in an area where they’ve struggled before! We look forward to making a positive impact on the lives of our students!!”
