2nd Grade
We thoroughly enjoy seeing our children grow academically and socially throughout the year. Some of the highlights of our year include study of habitats culminating with the creation of habitat dioramas, our annual trip to the Nutcracker Ballet, our author study of Jan Brett, our Read Across America Week which focuses on a literary study of mysteries, and our county-wide Fun Fitness Day. At the end of the year, we have a unit study that includes the rich history and symbols of our great state, Tennessee. As the study concludes students take part in a celebrate Tennessee day.
We believe making learning more fun and obtainable is crucial for our second graders. Over the last several years we have used iPads, trade books provided by Reading is Fundamental, math manipulatives, computers, the Accelerated Reader Program, PowerPoint Presentations, learning games, and many educational websites to enhance the learning experience of our second graders at Northside.

Expectations of 2nd Graders at Northside

We expect our second grade students to be respectful, responsible, and ready to learn. They should always strive to do their very best. They need to have mastered the skills and state standards from first grade. At the beginning of second grade it is important for students to be able to read with fluency which lends to text comprehension. In mathematics students will be working toward mastery of basic addition and subtraction facts.

Parent Engagement

Parents can help their children daily by checking their folders, reinforcing the skills they are learning, reviewing graded papers, and practicing basic math facts. Reading each night is essential for academic success. Parents can also aid throughout the year by attending Open House, Parent-Teacher Conferences, and other school functions, all of which are announced with reminders throughout the year.
